Natalie Merchant has such a rich, powerful tone that any cover song she performs will have at least some unique quality. Even if she tried phoning in a performance it would still stand out. Today on the radio I heard the 10,000 Maniacs cover of Cat Stevens's "Peace Train." This used to be just a harmless, eye-rolling, hippy-dippy song (as I remember hearing it in the 70s) but now "Peace Train" (no matter who performs it) is just a sickening, hypocritical roadkill of a song. It's a shame that Natalie Merchant's wonderful voice was wasted on this. (four stars for the performance; a million turds for the song itself).
